In 2023, only 49 breeders in the whole of Germany still registered English Lops. Every new breeder who joins makes a real difference for this breed. You don’t have to be a professional. You need interest, a bit of space and people who help you at the start.
1. Write to me
Tell me where you stand: whether you already keep rabbits, how much space you have and what draws you to the English Lop. I’ll tell you what you need to get started and put you in touch with breeders near you.
2. Come to a show
At local, district and state shows in Germany, pedigree rabbits are judged, often including English Lops. There you can see the animals up close, talk to breeders and get a feel for the standard. Once a year the English Lop breeders also get together for the IG meeting. You can read what happens there in my reports.
3. Get to know the IG
The international IG Englische Widder, the interest group for English Lop breeders, connects the breeders of this breed across national borders. I am its 3rd spokesperson and am happy to put you in touch.
Before you start
Read up on the basics. In my guides you’ll find what matters in your first year:
- Hutch equipment: what belongs in a hutch for English Lops
- The nest check: the first days after the litter is born
- The development of the ears: how the ears grow
- Measuring the ears correctly: what counts in judging
